HR Strange But True!
January 13, 2011

A few weeks ago, we ran an HR Strange but True column about unusual gifts for co-workers. There were some strange presents, from a bag of ice to a pack of toilet paper, but those didn’t top one HRSBT reader’s story. Her gift escaped before she could even open it!

Years ago, the HRSBT reader worked for an employer who organized a gift exchange. The employees wrote their names on a piece of paper, along with 3 gift ideas (incase someone drew the name of someone they didn’t know.)

One of the gifts this reader listed was a hamster! In her defense, she noted that she was young. The person who drew her name was excited about giving the little fur-ball as a gift—that was until the hamster escaped. The co-worker spent most of the night trying to recapture the furry critter by leaving peanut butter iced cheerios in the cage.

This HRSBT reader got her gift on time, but it came with a warning—that it was a bit of an escape artist!

Thank you HRSBT reader, we appreciate you sharing your story with us.
