HR Strange But True!

In the first article, 'SBT Readers Tell All: Pajama Party?', we discussed how dressing inappropriately can hurt an applicant’s chance of being hired. On the other hand, just because a candidate looks the part, doesn’t mean they are automatically a good fit for the job.

Here’s the reader’s story:

“I was hiring for a new hip-hop clothing store opening in a mall in upstate NY. A young man came for the interview dressed like a model out of a hip-hop magazine—stylish jeans, button down shirt from a niche vendor over a new graphic tee, and wearing a very expensive (for our market) leather jacket.”
“[The applicant was] very stylish and looking good except his leather jacket had a HUGE rip across one shoulder. I commented on his outfit and asked him what happened to his jacket. He told me ‘I caught it jumping a fence getting away from the police’.”

This isn't the first time we have heard of an applicant admitting to a brush with the law. In a recent article, an SBT reader submitted a story about a job applicant who risked breaking parole to go to a job interview.
