Many employers who provide domestic partner benefits require the employee and his or her domestic partner to sign an "affidavit of domestic partnership" to obtain coverage. Though the content of the affidavit is left to the company, typical agreements ask the employee and his or her domestic partner to swear that they:

  • Have shared a common residence for a specified period of time (generally, six months)
  • Agree to be jointly responsible for each other's basic living expenses incurred during the domestic partnership
  • Are not related by blood in a way that would prevent them from being married to each other in this state.
  • Are at least 18 years of age
