The federal Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century encourages ridesharing and commuting by mass transit by offering tax benefits to employers and employees. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 has increased the monthly exclusion for employer-provided transit and vanpool benefits.
