"Moonlighting" simply means working at multiple jobs or at one's own business, in addition to a primary job. Recent statistics released by the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics show that 5.3 percent of Americans held multiple jobs in 2005. The reasons workers moonlight are many, with financial need topping the list. However, moonlighting can have a detrimental effect on employees' performance in their primary job. As a result, some employers have adopted a written policy that clearly addresses what activities are allowed and what are not permitted.
