Unqualified Candidates Submit Nearly Half of Resumes, Employers Say

Employers say that on average, 44 percent of the resumes they receive are from unqualified candidates, according to a survey by Robert Half International and CareerBuilder.

The survey found that despite a larger pool of job candidates after widespread layoffs, employers continue to report that they are experiencing difficulty locating qualified individuals for open positions.

Forty-seven percent of hiring managers cited under-qualified applicants as their most common hiring challenge, followed by the reluctance of qualified candidates to leave secure positions (22 percent).

The difficulty in locating skilled individuals could benefit those who are qualified, the survey found. Sixty-one percent of hiring managers said their companies are willing to negotiate higher compensation for qualified candidates.
