Poll: College Students Prefer Smaller Employers

A recent poll reveals that small and medium-sized companies have an edge over large companies when it comes to recruiting new college graduates.

When asked "What size company would you most like to work for?", 70 percent of respondents chose "A small or medium size company" while just 30 percent chose "A large international company." The poll was conducted among nearly 500 recent graduates by CollegeGrad.com.

CollegeGrad.com, an entry level job site, believes graduates prefer smaller companies in part because they want more than just a big paycheck--they also want competitive benefits and a balanced work life. Small and medium sized companies may do a better job attracting college grads with a strong work-life balance, flextime and other unique benefits. Graduates are also more interested in working for a company where they have growth opportunities and can have a positive impact than they are in employer name recognition, according to CollegeGrad.com.

"This feedback is contrary to the generally held view that college graduates only want to work for Fortune 500 or Global 1000 companies. Not only are college grads interested in small and medium size companies, they prefer them," Brian Krueger, president of CollegeGrad.com explains. "So if you are a medium or small employer, wondering if you can compete at the entry level with the large employers, the answer is a resounding yes."
