Holiday Bonuses: Creativity Counts

When it comes to great holiday bonuses, it's not only size that matters—creativity counts, too.

In its December issue, Entrepreneur Magazine surveyed entrepreneurs and employees about the most memorable holiday bonuses they ever gave or received. Some of the more interesting responses the magazine received included:
  • A construction and engineering company in Diamond Bar, California, that, in 1995 told an employee to spend to the limit of his credit card (which he did, to the tune of $5,000). His employer settled the tab.
  • Employees at an Arizona-based clothing company whose boss took them to see U2 in concert—in Ireland.
  • A community relations management firm in Highland Heights, Ohio, that teased its employees for months about a holiday surprise (when it would come, what to wear), and then took them to Chicago for a shopping spree (cash provided) and a gourmet meal.
  • A New York City doctor who gave all of his employees a gift (including Tiffany jewelry), a gourmet dinner, a limo ride, and—drumroll, please—a check equal to their full year's salary before income taxes.
