The Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) of 1993 allows employees to balance their work and family responsibilities by taking unpaid leave for certain reasons. The purpose of the family medical leave act is to promote both the stability and economic security of families, and the national interests in preserving family integrity.

Family leave is applicable to employers in the private sector who are engaged in commerce or in any industry or activity affecting commerce, and who has 50 or more employees each working day during at least 20 calendar weeks or more in the current or preceding calendar year.

Schools and state and local government are also covered by the Family Medical Leave Act, but do not need to meet the 50 employee test. Most federal employees are covered by Title II of FMLA and are subject to regulations issued by the Office of Personnel Management.
