Death in Family
National Summary
Most workplaces provide a period of bereavement leave to employees who have experienced a death in their immediate families. If such leave is offered, employers should have a clearly written policy explaining how much leave time will be allowed for a death in the family and which family members are covered. In addition to a reasonable period of leave for the employee to make arrangements and grieve, employers may also offer grief management services via an employee assistance program (EAP).
