Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees International Union, which represents over 7,000 Chicago-area hotel workers, announced Wednesday that it will ask for large increases in some pay levels, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The proposed increases would more than double some workers' pay, making Chicago hotel workers some of the best paid in the industry.

In the talks, set to begin on August 5, union representatives will seek to increase workers' wages to match those in New York City, the Sun-Times reports. The contract expires on August 31, and covers workers responsible for over half the hotel rooms in Chicago. Both union leaders and rank-and-file members say that they are prepared to strike if necessary.

According to the Sun-Times, hotel wages and benefits have always been behind those of unionized hotel workers in California, Washington, D.C., Hawaii and Boston.

"From 1997 to 2001, the hotels made more money than ever in history," Henry Tamarin, president of Local 1, which represents about 5,800 members at downtown area hotels, told the Sun-Times. "They kept it. It's time to share."

The Local 450 represents an additional 1,200 workers at O'Hare Airport-area hotels.

In addition to seeking higher wages, Tamarin told the Sun-Times that the union will also ask for better health care benefits.

The union will be negotiating with the Hotel Employers Labor Relations Association, which represents several Chicago-area hotels. Arnold Karr, association spokesman, told the Sun-Times that he believes an agreement will be reached without a strike.
