Download Now Bush administration acted first, setting up www.dhs.gov as a way to communicate with the more than 170,000 federal employees moving to the Department of Homeland Security.
But a union, the American Federation of Government Employees, has responded by launching www.dhsworkers.org, a site that "provides vital alternative news and information regarding the development and implementation of DHS from a worker's perspective."
In a news release announcing the alternative site, AFGE National President Bobby L. Harnage charged that "the administration has provided a great deal of rhetoric about DHS and not enough information and answers."
The union says DHSworkers.org will conduct regular surveys of DHS employees on a variety of workplace issues relating to pay, classification, adverse action and performance evaluation systems.
In addition to answering important questions about representational rights of DHS workers, the site will also provide DHS workers with the opportunity to receive weekly news updates.
"What does the future hold for DHS workers after the 12-month transition period ends?" asked Harnage. "Check out DHSworkers.org, today."
AFGE says it is the largest federal employees union in the United States, representing 600,000 federal and D.C. workers.
