Dept. of Labor Offers Tips for Safe Holiday Parties

The Department of Labor's Working Partners for an Alcohol- and Drug-Free Workplace program is encouraging employers to access its resources for planning a safe holiday party and preventing impaired driving.

The department notes that improper use of alcohol may expose employers to liability under tort, workers' compensation, or other laws. The department says the only sure way to avoid potential liability is to avoid serving alcohol at holiday parties and to prohibit employees from bringing their own alcohol.

If employers choose to provide alcoholic beverages at their holiday party, they should consult and address state laws and resulting legal responsibilities, the department says.
