Keep Employees Happy: Allow Everyone to Dress More Casually at Work

Business casual seems to be the latest fashion trend in organizations today, according to a recent BLR poll. And, this is one fashion trend that does have advantages for people who have to worry about purchasing an expensive wardrobe of clothes for working in the business world. Obviously, one great advantage is the cost savings of buying more casual clothes as opposed to a collection of business suits.

Strategy
As more and more organizations are moving in this direction, business casual is becoming the norm rather than the exception in the business and working world today.

A recent BLR poll asked readers to describe their organization’s dress code. Here are the results:

Business Casual
46%
Relaxed and Casual
37%
Very Relaxed; Employees Choose
9%
Traditional Business Attire
7%

Almost half of the respondents said their organization’s dress code policy was “business casual,” while only seven percent reported “traditional business attire.” This HR poll was conducted on HR.BLR.com.

If you don’t already have a more casual dress policy or one is not entirely appropriate for your business, consider having “casual days” in which employees can come to work in more relaxed clothing. Many organizations have implemented “Casual Fridays” or even relaxed the company’s dress code for the summer months.

Results
One important benefit of implementing a business casual dress code is that people simply will be more comfortable at work. This can lead to a more relaxed atmosphere where people may be happier and more productive. People are influenced by the way they are dressed. A more formal attire can create a more restrained and limiting work environment. Allowing people to dress more casually not only allows them to be more comfortable, it also enables many other positive results as well. Establishing a “business casual” dress code is often one of the most popular policy changes you can introduce and it doesn’t really cost any money to implement!
