18% of Workers Participate in March Madness Pools at the Office

Eighteen percent of employees admit that they have participated in betting pools at work for the NCAA Men's basketball tournament (also known as March madness), according to a survey by CareerBuilder.

The survey found that men are more likely to participate in the pools than women are. Twenty-four percent of male workers said they have participated in March Madness pools in the office, compared to 11 percent of females.

The survey included more than 8,000 workers and was conducted online between November 12 and December 1, 2008.

While such pools are technically illegal in some states, the laws are rarely enforced.

A 2008 poll by the Society for Human Resource Management found that more than seven out of 10 workplaces tolerate the pools. Most respondents said they have no formal or informal policies regarding this sort of gambling in the workplace.
