Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) has announced her plans to resign from the U.S. House of Representatives this week in order to concentrate on her recovery from the critical injuries she received after being shot at an event in her district a year ago.
“This was a complete surprise, I was not expecting it at all,” Jason Brown, a political science senior who has interned for Giffords since the fall of 2009, told the [University of] Arizona Daily Wildcat “She is doing what’s best for her and her district, and I hope that after she spends a lot of time recovering and focusing on herself, she will run again in the near future.”

Brown told the paper that after Giffords’ resignation, he doesn’t know if his internship will continue. If his internship is terminated, Brown said he would consider volunteering on a campaign for Gifford’s successor. Arizona Governor Jan Brewer will call a special election after the resignation is given.
