EEOC Releases Draft Strategic Plan, Addresses Social Media

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has released a draft of its Strategic Plan for Fiscal Years 2012 – 2016 for public comment.

This strategic plan, a requirement by Congress, will direct the agency’s work for the next 4 years and serve as a foundation for the development of more detailed annual plans, budgets, and related program performance information in the future.

The EEOC’s strategic plan has three objectives:

Strategic Objective I—Combat employment discrimination through strategic law enforcement.

Strategic Objective II—Prevent employment discrimination through education and outreach.

Strategic Objective III—Deliver excellent service through effective systems, updated technology, and a skilled and diverse workforce.

The EEOC’s draft plan acknowledges and addresses technological advancements, with an emphasis on social networks. The plan requires the creation and implementation of a social media plan.

 “Changes in technology will impact how EEOC interacts with its customers.  When its previous Strategic Plan was drafted, Facebook was not as pervasive as it is today, Twitter had only been in existence a few months, and hand-held tablets, did not exist,” notes the agency.

“Each of these technologies is now commonplace and much of the public expects the EEOC to utilize them in its enforcement and education and outreach activities.”

The EEOC is soliciting comments from the public, including advocacy groups and individuals.
