The Freedom Awards are the highest honors presented each year in concert with the National Committee of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve.
This year's winners are Electronic Data Systems (EDS) of Michigan, BAE Systems of New Hampshire, Southwest Airlines of New Mexico, the city of Bedford, Va., and the Boeing Co. of Washington state.
They represent the north central, northeast, south central, southeast, and western parts of the country. They were selected from 29 organizations nominated from 28 states and the District of Columbia.
"We are fighting the war on many fronts. And we could not win the war without the help of the Guard and the Reservists," Bush said. "They in turn could not do their vital work without the support of their employers."
Nearly 57,000 members of the seven reserve forces were pressed into service at home and abroad by Nov. 9.
How have the employers helped?
- BAE Systems, which employs 75 National Guardsmen and Reservists, provides up to 60 days of benefits when its employees are called to active duty. BAE also offers indefinite employment to employees called to active duty. The company not only encourages National Guard and Reserve duty for employees, but is a major supporter of the USO program.
- The City of Bedford, Va., is an active partner with the Virginia ESGR Committee, the Virginia National Guard, and in particular Company A, 1st Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division (Light). The city works closely with these organizations in charity fund-raising and annual events, such as Veterans Day activities. The mayor and other city officials work closely with the state ESGR committee to ensure the city's support of Guardsmen and Reservists.
- Boeing, with more than 3,000 Reservists and Guardsmen in its employ, has established an in-company ombudsman program. The company also established the Boeing Guard and Reserve Network as a means for all company employees to get information on the Guard and Reserve. With a charter, elected officers, and monthly meetings, the network has membership representing all of Boeing's companies, and the senior staff. Boeing also established a committee that includes senior executives to oversee policy changes and initiatives that will support the military careers of Boeing employees.
- EDS leaders have instituted a "Reserve-friendly" philosophy throughout the organization. EDS offers to continue company pay, in lieu of military pay, if the company pay exceeds what employees earn in the military. EDS also hosted video teleconferences for the 49th Infantry Division while the unit was deployed to Bosnia.
- Southwest Airlines developed a Military Transition Program to assist its National Guard and Reserve employees and brought the airline industry together to discuss and resolve issues with its Guard and Reserve Airline Symposium. Southwest has been an active partner with New Mexico Guard and Reserve units in raising funds for various charities. Southwest also continues civilian pay for its employees while they serve their country on active duty.
