100 Employers Answer Government's Call on Healthcare Transparency

More than 100 employers have committed to four goals aimed at providing more information on healthcare quality and costs of services so consumers can make more informed decisions, says U.S. Department of Health and Human Services chief Mike Leavitt.

Last month, Leavitt called on employers to commit to the following four goals

  • Increase transparency in reporting of the quality of care delivered by healthcare providers
  • Boost transparency in reporting the price of care
  • Encourage adoption of health information technology standards
  • Offer incentives that encourage and facilitate high-quality and cost-effective health care.

"I am proud of the substantial progress we have made in the past month. More than 100 companies have committed to helping their employees get better care and better value from their health care," Leavitt says.

So far, more than a 100 companies have answered the call, including General Motors, Ford Motor Company, DaimlerChrysler, IBM, Xerox, Starbucks, Aetna, Humana Inc., General Mills. and Dow Chemical Company, says Leavitt.
