The effects of marking the anniversary of the September 11 attacks will be varied but may include fear, sadness, an inability to concentrate, and irritability.
The attacks were "a traumatic event for this nation and reactions to that event continue," says Dr. Ian Anderson, CEO of Synnabar Consulting, a consulting firm based in Dallas that helps advise business leaders on how to enhance their working environment. "When individuals suffer emotionally traumatic events they often experience `anniversary reactions.'" That is, the anniversary of the event can trigger a re-experiencing of the emotions that accompanied the original event.
Anderson suggests that effective leadership is the key to recovery. Organizational leaders should take three key steps:
1. Acknowledge the anniversary and the emotions that accompany it. These are normal and part of the natural healing process.
2. Be visible as a leader. Foster a sense of community; we have all faced a common threat and emerged stronger, with a renewed sense of purpose, as a result.
3. Communicate your vision for the future along with your plan for how the healing and the recovery will occur. This should include:
- What we have lost;
- What we have gained;
- Where we are now;
- Where we need to go;
- How we get there.
"Leaders of organizations can not only mitigate the effect of whatever 'anniversary reactions' occur amongst their colleagues; they can use the power of this event to steer the ship back on course," says Anderson.
