Survey: 8 Percent of Employees Care for Elders and Children

Workers who are caring for for both children and elderly relatives reported that they are spending an average of 36 hours per week on caregiving duties, about enough hours to make it a second full-time job, according to a survey by ComPsych Corporation, a provider of employee-assistance programs.

About 8 percent of respondents said they are caring for both generations.

"Two things appear to be increasing: workload and what we call 'care-load,'" says Richard A. Chaifetz, chairman and CEO of ComPsych. "More and more Baby Boomers are caring for elderly relatives as well as children. Add to this the increased pressures at work due to layoffs, and you've got employees in dire need of help."

These workers reported getting 6 hours of sleep per night, and needing to take off 18.9 vacation and sick days per year to deal with personal and caretaking issues.

The survey included responses from employees of more than 700 ComPsych client companies nationwide.
