HR Strange But True!
March 25, 2004

We all know that HR is never dull, but sometimes it can get downright strange...

You're fired! (insert registered trademark here)

Mogul-turned-reality-TV-star Donald Trump wants to trademark a phrase you might use from time to time: "You're fired!"

Trump uses it to dismiss underlings on the hit TV show "The Apprentice," and now he has filed an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to trademark it.

Trump said he intends to emblazon "You're Fired" on games and casino services, and "You're Fired! Donald J. Trump" on clothing.

But as the Reuters News Service notes, you probably won't have to alter your vocabulary if the application wins approval. A U.S. Patent and Trademark Office official said the trademark would only protect the specific uses Trump cited in the application.
