HR Strange But True!
February 17, 2010

A candidate for 2010 McDonald's Crew Person of the Year, Wendy Beaulieu, comes by her greatness as an employee honestly--and genetically. Her parents met while working for the hamburger chain--and at the exact same restaurant!

Wendy, who was chosen from over 21,000 employees to represent the New England Region for 2010 McDonald's Crew Person of the Year, works behind the same counter that her mother Donna did when she met her father Rick, who was a swing manager at the store in Glastonbury, Connecticut, according to an article in the Hartford Courant.

Both of her sisters have worked there, and she hopes her sons will work there someday. The restaurant is truly “a family affair,” Wendy says of the location.

Rick, whose specialty was making milkshakes, said the restaurant was “a highly competitive dating scene” in the 1970s with a lot of intrigue. In fact, he was dating another employee when he became smitten with Donna.

Restaurant owner/operator Scott Taylor, whose father ran the restaurant when the Beaulieus worked there, said it is not uncommon for romance to bloom under the arches. “We work hard together; we play hard together,” he said, adding that he has attended several weddings of brides and grooms who had been employees. “The company should consider changing the motto from ‘I'm lovin' it' to ‘I'm really lovin' it,” joked Taylor .

Beaulieu was in high school when she began working where her parents met and just returned because the position offered flexible hours that helped her with childcare issues. Her position, as the party supervisor/hostess who coordinates and supervises birthday parties and sets up McEducation Night programs, helps her use her training in early childhood education, she told the newspaper. If she wins, she will receive a cash prize along with a trip to Orlando , Florida for the McDonald's Worldwide Convention.

Your SBT editors love this story, but find it ironic that the Beaulieus, who met at McDonalds--named their daughter—Wendy!
