HR Strange But True!
May 28, 2009

Is there a sound if a tree falls in the woods and no one hears it? Is a workplace kiss a no-no if no one in the workplace sees it--except the security camera?

Overturning a lower court ruling, an appeals court judge in the Anatolian region of Turkey just reinstated a woman who was fired by her boss when he saw her fleetingly kiss her boyfriend on the company's closed-circuit TV system.

The boss terminated the woman for “breaching the order of the workplace.” The Anatolian region is under control of the Islamic AK Party, according to a story by Reuters, and encourages socially conservative work rules.

The judge said that because the kissing was “momentary,” and no other workers or customers saw it happen, it was an overreaction to say it had caused an actual breach of order.
