HR Strange But True!
September 09, 2009

Even the Department of Labor’s staunchest critic would have a difficult time denying her praise for her choices in ... music. Just take a look at the playlist she created to celebrate Labor Day.

In honor of Labor Day, Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis created a playlist of songs about workers and work for the Sirius XM's "The Spectrum."

The Department of Labor promoted Solis's guest DJ spot in its newsletter and gave a preview of the playlist. The artists on the playlist included:

  • Bob Dylan,
  • Bruce Springsteen,
  • The Clash,
  • Devo,
  • John Lennon,
  • Bob Marley, and
  • Los Lobos.

We love all of those musicians, but we hope Solis included many female musicians as well (by press time, we weren't able to locate a complete playlist to verify).

However, we did find a report that may satisfy those of you who see themselves as masters of TCB. Solis did include BTO's Taking Care of Business, that staple of drive-time morning radio.

In addition to that classic, Solis included Whistle While You Work, which was written for the Disney animated movie Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs .

“The Spectrum's Labor Day Weekend with the Secretary of Labor” show ran from September 4 through Labor Day.

Prior to confirmation as Secretary of Labor in February, Solis represented the 32nd Congressional District in California.
