HR Strange But True!
May 31, 2001
You already know that HR is never boring, but here's proof from this week's news that it can get downright strange...

See You at the Ballpark

Suspicious about an employee who's called in sick? You might want to check the schedule of your local baseball team.

Nearly 1 in 8 people who describe themselves as major-league baseball fans admit they've called in sick to work so they can attend a game, according to Martiz Marketing Research Inc.

The St. Louis-based firm says it polled 1,400 randomly selected adults from throughout the United States. Fifty-eight percent of those people said they follow professional baseball. Of that total, 12.6 percent -- or one in eight -- answered "yes" when asked if they had ever taken a sick day to attend a ball game.

"It was somewhat surprising to discover how many people said they sneak off from work to attend a baseball game," said Phil Wiseman, vice president of marketing for Martiz. "But you have to admit, heading to the ballpark can be pretty tempting on a beautiful, sunny afternoon."
