HR Strange But True!
February 04, 2003

Frustrating, isn't it? You know exactly what our leaders need to do to fix the health-care system, but nobody listens to you. Well, here's your chance to save the country and pocket a $10,000 prize to boot.

The Associated Press reports that a Seattle health-care consultant is sponsoring a contest in hopes of sparking ideas and starting a public debate about health-care reform. The current crisis is "hitting people too close to home," the consultant, Kathleen O'Connor, said. "But it's so big and confusing, people don't know where to begin. I thought, 'Anybody can enter a contest.' "

O'Connor said the idea for the contest came to her as she worked on a book about health care. Writing about the problems and challenges was a snap, but she was struggling with the last chapter: "Where do we go from here?" So she decided to ask.

"It was the only thing I could think of to break the stranglehold of special interests," she said. "We've never asked the public what we should do."

The contest deadline is March 1 for letters of intent and July 1 for completed plans; entry fees range from $10 for senior citizens and students to $500 for corporations.
