HR Strange But True!
September 14, 2006

If you ever sat through a bad date or another awkward social situation and hoped that an "emergency" call from your boss would save you, the good people who created the Popularity Dialer have something for you.

The Popularity Dialer is a service that allows you to select the exact time you want to receive a call. The service gives you a choice of five scenarios to hear when you answer your phone, including one that is supposed to be from a boss asking you to return to the office.

When you answer the automated call, you'll hear a prerecorded message that provides one half of a conversation. All you have to do is provide the other half of the conversation to escape the awkward social situation.

In the message from the boss, "Mr. Johnson" wants you back at the office right away to fix a photo copier that has spilled ink all over the floor.

Other automated calls aim to make you seem popular. The service gives users five complimentary calls to a single number.

The founders of the service say they created the service to help users navigate awkward social situations and build confidence.
