HR Strange But True!

Last month, we ran a column on outrageous interviews and asked for readers to submit their own experiences. This week, we are featuring a few of their strange but true interview tales.

Appearance is an important part of the interview process. A recent BLR poll found that arriving poorly dressed or groomed is one of the worst mistakes a candidate can make, second only to arriving late.

Hiring managers expect applicants to dress the part. So, it’s not surprising that this interviewer was a little shocked when an applicant showed up in something particularly unprofessional.

Here’s the reader's story:

“She sat there completing the employment application, apparently comfortable, poised, and confident. When the interview got underway, she obviously was a bit shaken by the unexpected turn of events from application to interview.”
“She spoke first, blurting out with displeasure and indignation that, had she known she would be INTERVIEWED that day, she NEVER would have worn her pajamas! [You're right--she did not get the job!]”

There were several other submissions about applicants' choices in clothing, including this story:

“Once I had a male interviewee show up for an interview in flip flops and a fishnet shirt!”
