HR Strange But True!
August 29, 2003

We all know that HR is never boring, but sometimes it can get downright strange...

Really, what was he smoking?

A 24-year-old man who worked at the Evergreen State Fair in Snohomish County, Wash., was fired after being caught smoking "an unknown narcotic" from a glass pipe, according to authorities. But the weirdness was just getting started.

Upon being fired, the man attempted to steal money from another carnival worker, then went to a women's restroom, where he exposed himself, sheriff's spokeswoman Jan Jorgensen said. When deputies arrived, the man put on his pants - but then took off his shirt and fled through a window in one of the restroom's stalls. Groping women as he ran, he next scaled a chain-link fence and reached a highway, where he attempted to steal a car from a woman.

When that failed, he ran across the highway and tried to jump aboard a passing train - which happened to be traveling at about 45 miles per hour, Jorgensen said. The attempt was not a success. Knocked back by the train, he suffered multiple fractures and had to be airlifted to a Seattle hospital. Jorgensen said the man would probably be charged with indecent liberties and attempted robbery when released.
