HR Strange But True!
September 07, 2001

A school principal in Wilmette, Ill., changed genders over the summer, and some parents are upset about it - enough so to be meeting privately to discuss their options, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Meanwhile Avoca School District 37 administrators have held the first of four meetings with small groups of parents and a child psychologist, who has been on hand to answer questions.

The principal of the Marie Murphy School ended the last school year as Donald Reed and came back as Deanna Reed, according to the Tribune. Reed, a tenured employee, has been principal of the middle school for 12 years.

"It is our goal to have him take into consideration the effect this has on the community at large," said parent John Regan, who is organizing a petition drive. Regan said he remains unhappy after attending the district's meeting and believes Reed's gender change could be disturbing to students.

"I'd like to see enough pressure put on Dr. Reed to see him bow out gracefully," he said.
