Only now is China allowing workers to file sexual-harassment suits, and so far the workers are 0-1. A woman who brought the country's first case lost it this week in district court in Xi'an, according to reports in China's state-run news media.

The court ruled that the woman, surnamed Tong, lacked evidence to back her claims. She was alleging that her boss had asked her to go to a hotel room and repeatedly touched her body while promising her opportunities to advance her career at a state-owned firm.

Tong had also alleged that her boss withheld her bonus and allowances when she refused his advances and would not allow her back to work after leaving her job for a time in anger.

Tong had sought only a public apology during the hearing, which began in late October and lasted nearly two months. She could not seek a settlement out of court because sexual harassment is not clearly defined under Chinese law, a local newspaper reported.
