HR Strange But True!
May 24, 2007

Slipping on a banana peel only happens in cartoons, right? Tell that to Cook County, Illinois, where one of the county's employees blames a workplace injury on a banana peel. No, the cwazy wabbit didn't put it there.

A clerk at Stroger Hospital says she slipped on a banana peel outside the bathroom at her workplace in 2003, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Joyce Walker, who has worked for the hospital for more than 25 years, says the slip caused a serious knee injury that forced her to miss 12 weeks of work.

Now, the county will add to the $2 million tab taxpayers will have to pick up for worker injuries this year by paying Walker $4,110 in compensation, the newspaper reports.

"For as pathetic as it seems, it's the cost of doing business," Liz Gorman, a county commissioner, tells the newspaper.

Another commissioner tells the newspaper that it is the first time he's seen a case in which a county employee slipped on a banana peel.
