Telefonica fired a model for commenting about Moammar Qaddafi’s family and her relationship with the former Libyan dictator’s son.
Vanessa Hessler appeared on billboards and TV commercials for Telefonica’s Internet service in Germany until a magazine interview got a little too personal—and political.
Hessler, 23, discussed a four-year relationship she had with the late Mutassim Qaddafi, who was captured with his father. She described it as “a very beautiful love story.” She went on to defend her former lover’s family.
“The [Qaddafi] family is not how they are being depicted, they are normal people,” she told the interviewer.
Her comments to the magazine got back to her employer and she was fired.
A spokesperson for Telefonica confirmed the termination, saying “Vanessa Hessler’s relationships are private business … However we cannot accept her comments on the Libya conflict.”
