HR Strange But True!
April 20, 2006

The mayor of Federal Heights, Colorado, says he took a side job so he could pay for his health insurance. There's nothing too strange about that, but once you see where he did his moonlighting, you'll know why his second job raised a few eyebrows.

Mayor Dale Sparks was working as a doorman at Bare Essence, an all-nude club, when law enforcement officials raided it recently, the Rocky Mountain News reports. After the raid, police charged some dancers with prostitution and others with violating a rule against lap dances.

Sparks tells the newspaper that he knew nothing about the activity that police say took place inside the club, saying he just checked IDs and collected cover charges. He says he took the job so he could pay for his health insurance.

"The bottom line is (that) what I make being doorman pays for my health insurance," he tells the newspaper. "Still, I knew there would be an issue from a few citizens' perspective about working there."

He tells the newspaper that he will quit his job at Bare Essence while he finishes the last year and a half of his term. He didn't say how he'd pay for health insurance in the meantime.
