HR Strange But True!
January 06, 2011

In a previous HR Strange but True column, we asked our readers to submit their own stories about holiday work parties gone awry. One reader shared his experience and the important lesson he learned—don’t drink too much.

The story
Several years ago, in the mid 70's he went to a company holiday party at his boss’ house.

As the booze flowed, so did the rude, obnoxious, and inappropriate comments that could have bordered upon disrespect at times. Even though they were said in jest, they were probably perceived as rude. For example, one of the individuals at the party was a bald man and jokes were made about the possibility of using him as a bowling ball.

At the end of the evening the hostess made departing breakfasts of bacon and eggs with hash browns for everyone at the party. He remembers being extremely piggish, gluttonous, and regrets all of what happened that evening.

While he doesn’t remember anyone else talking about it afterwards, he has remembered the experience, and the lesson he learned, that too much alcohol can bring out crude and disruptive behavior.
