HR Strange But True!
December 02, 2010

Another reality boss has egg on his face for not following sound HR practices. This time it’s Hell’s Kitchen star chef Gordon Ramsey, and he’s in trouble for not checking out an “applicant’s” immigration status before he “hired” her.

Bet there were many bleepable words heard on both sides of the Atlantic when British celeb chief Ramsey, famous for having the foulest mouth in the workplace, found out that a winner of his show can’t get her prize, working at his soon-to-reopen grill in London's posh Savoy Hotel!

FoxNews and The New York Post are reporting that the request for a work visa submitted by the program’s English producer ITV for winner Holli Ugalde was denied by the U.K.’s Home Office. No reason was given.

In lieu of the stint as a guest chef at the Savoy, ITV told The Post that Ugalde will receive a cash prize of an undisclosed amount. Luckily for Ugalde, she just landed a stateside job as the chef of a new restaurant in Florida.

So while the winner ends up doubly winning, the incident is rather embarrassing for the show, considering that the gig in London was always the grand prize! So much for vetting the applicants. It’s reminiscent of The Apprentice-Second Chance contestant who was actually on a leave of absence from her job, not unemployed.
